Keto Chocolate Donuts

A keto dessert recipe adapted from our keto brownies

Why call them a donut if they are a brownie or vice versa? Well, the reason is simple. They are BOTH. Explaining how is hard, however, we will give it a try....      Our keto chocolate donuts look and feel like a traditional bakery style donut with the richness of a fudge brownie.  Everyone who has tried them had similar things to say:

Wow, that tastes like a brownie on the edges, but the inside is a donut. I can totally dunk this in my coffee!

Dunking these keto donuts in our coffee is absolutely something we have done a gazillion times. During the hot weather when turning the oven on inside of the house is unheard of, I bring the pan out to the flat top grill.  Then, using a turkey roasting pan turned upside down over them, let them bake away.  It takes a little bit longer, but we are sitting outside enjoying the scenery anyways.

Can I use Coconut Flour instead of Almond Flour?

Yes for this recipe. It contains almond flour or coconut flour version. That isn't always the case. A lot of times swapping out one for the other will not work without changing up the other ingredients, like amount of egg or cream. Coconut flour absorbs more liquid than almond flour and can cease up or make your baked goods very dry and dense. When a recipe calls for almond flour and you want to use coconut flour simply bump up the amount of liquid.  Use your judgment. Start off by adding a tablespoon at a time and you should be able to easily tell if you have added enough.

Something to consider when choosing almond flour or coconut flour is price. IF you are not allergic to one or the other and just trying to find the best to use, compare prices. Keto ingredients can be very expensive. Our preference is blanched almond flour from Anthony's on Amazon. NOT an affiliate link, we just really love that almond flour.  The price is amazing for what you get.

Can I Use Almond Flour or Coconut Flour For Donuts

You can use either. I really enjoy using almond flour for taste and texture, but if you enjoy coconut flour more either one will work for these chocolate brownie donuts. I do find coconut flour results in a slightly more dense texture of the donuts. They type of flour you use is up to you.

Tips For Keto Chocolate Donut

  • Grease your donut pan really well. If you don't they will stick and you will break your donuts from getting them out.
  • Fill your donut molds only ¾ or less full or else they will bake and spill over.
  • Make sure your baking soda is fresh, if not the donuts will not rice properly.
  • Sprinkle with some powdered sweetener for added sweetness to fix that sweet tooth. Or top with some sugar-free chocolate chips.

How to Store Keto Donuts

The beauty of this keto donut recipe is you can store on the counter for a few days, or toss in the fridge to extend the life of your donuts. The only thing is don't add the dusting of sweetener on top if you plan to store in the fridge, as it will melt into the donuts. Just dust as you eat them.

Can You Freeze Chocolate Keto Donuts

Yes. Simply allow your donuts to cool completely on counter, and then place in a freezer container or airtight bag. Do not sprinkle with the powdered sweetener on top, as it will melt into donuts. Then store in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw on counter or fridge.

When ready to eat, dust with powdered sweetener and enjoy.

When To Serve Keto Donuts

  • Breakfast
  • Mid-day snack
  • Dessert
  • Make for Brunch or Guests

Can I Make A Chocolate Glaze For These Keto Donuts

Absolutely. If you have a low carb/keto glaze recipe, feel free to make it. Then dip half the donut into the sweet chocolate glaze and then let it sit up on a wire baking rack. This is one of my favorite keto diet desserts to enjoy on those days where you want to break up the day with a sweet treat.

Which Is Correct Donuts or Doughnuts?

Either works. Donuts is something that offers a shorter version of the word doughnut. But, depending on where you live, you might use one or the other. Both are okay to use and spell.

Why Are There Holes in Donuts?

Bakeries made donuts with a hole so as they fried up the donuts, the whole donut would cook evenly. If they left the center in it, sometimes it was doughy and less done. That is how donuts came about. Can I just say, I am so happy about that!
