What is the Philly Cheesesteak Appetizer Crostini

Our Philly Cheesesteak Crostini Appetizer is modeled after the famous sub that's loaded with creamy cheese sauce and seasoned shaved steak. There are many variations of a Philly Cheesesteak, especially when it comes to appetizers. For this steak crostini recipe, we went with a deconstructed style, or open faced, preparation. The sauce is cream cheese based with finely chopped peppers, onions and shaved steak. Crostini is a term used described slices or "slabs" of toasted bread topped with other ingredients, albeit a very versatile dish.

Our Steak Crostini is Easy

Ok, these are so easy to whip up, you will make them a go to recipe for last minute guests or entertaining. Basically all there is to do after slicing bread is cook the meat. After the shaved steak is sauteed all that's left to do is some mixing and assembling, then bake them. We have made this Philly Cheesesteak appetizer recipe so many times that it now takes me 10 minutes to throw it together.

What Kind of Steak Do I use for this Appetizer

Our Philly cheesesteak appetizer uses shaved steak on the crostini. Pre-shaved steak can be found at almost any grocery store meat department, if you shop Walmart I know they have it. If you can not find shaved steak here are a few alternatives:

  • Roast beef from the deli counter- order your roast beef "shaved not shredded".  This way you can break it up yourself while cooking rather than it being way too small.

  • Sirloin- worst case scenario you can always slice your own, grab a sirloin steak and cut it against the grain as thin as possible. Then finely chop going the opposite way.
  • Steak-Ums - you can always go old school and grab that frozen pre-sliced steak product from the freezer section. Remember that school lunch steak and cheese?

The Keto Version of our Philly Cheesesteak Crostini

The ingredients for this appetizer are all keto approved except for the bread. To make this a keto approved Philly cheesesteak appetizer simply pick your own favorite keto or low carb bread or make this Philly Cheesesteak recipe from the Hungry Elephant. Another great idea would be to stuff it into small peppers, top with cheese, broil and serve.

  2. I make this steak and cheese often, I like less bread so putting it on a slice is great. It tastes so good.
