Please excuse the photography, this is an old post from when our camera was ancient and file sizes smaller. This is in the Reshoot Cue! Regardless, the recipe is killer.
Cinnamon Roll Apple Pies
Once upon a time, there was a muffin tin. The muffin tin noticed some pretty sweet looking apples on the counter and...... just kidding. There is no story here, however we simply created a crazy good recipe in a quick and convenient way. See, there really was a muffin tin that called out to be stuffed with cinnamon rolls and apple pie filling. I planned to use cinnamon rolls instead of crust, therefore it seemed obvious to make a Dutch crumble topped pie. Boom. Cinnamon roll mini Dutch style apple pie cups. Sure, the name is long, but they taste ridiculous.
What Are Mini Dutch Apple Pies
Mini Dutch apple pies are just a smaller version of the traditional 9" or larger pie. Apparently the single crust pie dates back to the early 1500's and was made with a crust on the bottom and scraps (like today's lattice) on the top. Most known to people now, the term Dutch apple pie refers to a pie crust bottom with a crumble top. Dutch crumble topping is usually made with brown sugar, flour and nuts, although you can use whatever you want. In this recipe I added raisins and fresh apples.
Can I Make These Mini Apple Pies with Puff Pastry
Yes! You can absolutely make these mini apple pies with puff pastry, as a matter of fact, we recommend it. While you are cooking anyways, why not? Make extra apple filling, skip the cinnamon roll dough and simply line the puff pastry inside the muffin cups instead. Follow the baking directions on the box of pastry dough.
Can I Use Store Bought Apple Pie Filling
Absolutely again! You can use anything you want for filling. One thing I buy often is the Apple Pie Filling from Walmart. I'm not sure how they do it, but that apple pie filling is fantastic for store bought. It is actual real big slices and less "filling" mush. Aside from apple pie filling, there are a variety of other things you can put inside of these cinnamon roll cups like-
- Cherry Pie Filling
- Apricot Preserves
- Strawberry Jam
- Fresh Berries Coated In Sugar
- Peaches and Pecans
Making Our Mini Dutch Cinnamon Roll Apple Pies

NOTE* We recommend making the pie filling FIRST so it can cool, while you prepare the cinnamon rolls and the crumble.

Short Cuts And Kitchen Tips
Sometimes recipes like this get looked over because it appears to have a lot of process, steps or ingredients. Who wants all those dishes or mess? Here are a few tips and tricks to make it more simple and limit the clean up.
Short Cuts
- Use store bought apple pie filling. Skip the homemade version completely and save a few dishes!
- Try Granola or Cereal. Instead of making a homemade crumble you could always use granola or a good cereal for the topping. For this recipe I topped mine with crumble AND the cereal granola which had raisins and I added fresh apples.
- Skip the muffin tin. Use puff pastry, cut it into equal squares (you should get 4), fill with apple pie filling, pinch edges closed and seal, there you have it mini apple pies with puff pastry. Simple.
Kitchen Tips
- Be Prepared. As Chef Anne Burrill says "Mise En Place!", a French term for putting everything in place. Have it all out and ready to go.
- Reuse Dishes. So you need a small bowl for everythingggg. Well you are only making one thing at a time, so wash the bowl up real quick, dry it and reuse. Now, I'm not suggesting you take your marinated chicken out of the bowl and wash it up quick to make your salad. I'm saying, you just made a crumble (no raw ingredients that could cross contaminate), wash it out and use it for your glaze. That type of thing.
Freeze and Eat These Cinnamon Roll Apple Pies for Breakfast
On the weekend make a double batch of these and freeze! Simply allow each mini Dutch apple pie to cool completely. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap and place in a zip top freezer bag. To serve- remove from freezer, discard plastic wrap and microwave for 30 seconds at a time until warmed through. Eat all week!

Love this recipe but I need help with amounts. I can cinnamon rolls , size ? the picture shows 6 only but my cinnamon can holds more cinnamon rolls. And only 1 apple? seems like very little. Help please.
HI Gloria,
There was 8 cinnamon rolls in our can, not all were photographed. I am not sure what you mean by size? These were just regular cinnamon rolls not the Pillsbury Grands if that is what you mean.
Yes, one apple. Once it is diced and mixed with the raisins, dates and pecans from the cereal it is plenty of filling. Feel free to dice more apple if you wish.
Hope that helps!
Thank you!
Yum, these look delicious! I love how you showed the whole process of buying and making them too.
Thank you so much Janis!
