This Hershey's Homemade Hot Cocoa mix is the perfect decadent treat on a cold winter day. It also makes a great gift!
Hershey's Special Dark Homemade Instant Hot Cocoa Mix Recipe
Wow it is cooling off fast! So between the cold and my insane obsession with chocolate, I immediately start craving hot chocolate. Usually we buy the box of instant little envelopes, but I found that we go through them too fast. A lot of times they are just not as "chocolatey" as I want. Homemade hot cocoa can take too long unless you have a pre made mix, which is what we made here.
For us, making it homemade is not only tastier, but cheaper. Yes, you can get the small 6 envelope box for $1 , but here that would be gone in two days. The only ingredient I noticed was really expensive was the dry milk.... Â oh boy! Â The large box (about the size of a cereal box) was $18 !
Instead, we used non dairy creamer. Â After trying the hot cocoa tonight, I actually like it better. So if you go through a lot of hot chocolate during the season, try this recipe, it is easy , less expensive and you can add an extra scoop if you want a more decadent, rich cocoa.
Hershey's Special Dark Homemade Instant Hot Cocoa Mix Recipe
Also makes a great gift !
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Hersey's Special Dark Cocoa Powder - $2.68, prices may vary by store
- 2 Cups Non Dairy Creamer, at least 11 oz. - Walmart has a brand that is $1
- 1 Cup Sugar
- A tiny dash of salt, about ¼ tsp.
- This recipe made a 1 quart jar of mix and we still have plenty ingredients left over to make more.
Instructions
- In a large bowl combine all the ingredients and mix well. If you have a sifter use it, if not that is ok. I suggest having a cup of hot water on hand so you can test it out before you store it. This way you can see if you want to alter the recipe (more sugar etc) Remember that this is Special Dark cocoa so it will be stronger, more bitter. You can of course use regular cocoa, just up the amount to 2 Cups. Funnel into a Mason jar or air tight storage container.
- To Serve : Add 2 tablespoons to one standard size ( standard size is classified as 10 oz. ) mug of hot boiling water.
- Leave room in the mug to add more mix till it's just as you like it.

I used powdered sugar and also added dark chocolate pudding mix. Takes it to a whole new level!
This is only ok. I was all excited coz I love dark chocolate.i have made so many hot chocolate mixes and have never found one I loved.
I totally know what you mean, I think it's one of those things that just tastes so much different than store bought that there is no way to replicate it. I always prefered homemade so it is just right for us! 🙂
Thanks very much and I am glad that you are so happy and that cooking is your thing.
I just bought a very large tin of Starbucks hot chocolate that you have to add milk to. I've been researching on the Internet how to add powdered milk to it to save money and to actually not need any milk in the refrig. I usually eat Almond milk with my cereal and I've tried that and it did not taste that great. Your recipe is what I've been looking for and keep up the great and talented work.
Do you know of a good brand of "instant powdered milk" that you have been successful with? If so would you please share that with us.
Thank you SO much for your kind words Judy! To be completely honest with you , I just buy the store brand powdered milk. I totally agree that almond milk is not good in this.
I am glad you like the recipe!
Hi Melissa,
Thanks for sharing the recipe. Here's a single cup recipe that's pretty simple and really good.
Mix in large mug:
1 heaping teaspoons hersheys special dark cocoa powder
2 teaspoons sugar or splenda for baking
pinch of salt (or sea salt)
Add milk (or half and half) to fill cup approx 1/4 full. Stir as well as you can, trying to encorporate the dry ingredients into the chocolate.
Continue adding milk and stirring until the mug is nearly full and the cocoa is mostly mixed in. Check your taste to be sure you have enough cocoa flavor. You can add more sweeter at the end as well.
Microwave for one minute on high. Stir carefully but vigoriously. Heat again for 45-60 seconds. Check carefully for temp and flavor. Add peppermint, cinamon, vanilla, orange peel, marshmallow or other flavors. Enjoy.
I love this recipe thank you for sharing!
Hey, could we make this with out the creamer? What does the creamer do?
Yes you can make it without the creamer, the creamer was just for added richness. Like adding milk to an already made cup.
Did you use Hershey unsweetened cocoa?
HI Victoria,
It does not say on the container that it is unsweetened, but the ingredients are simply just cocoa. So I assume it is unsweetened.
My five sisters and I are chocoholics. Since the budget is tight this year I am going to make this recipe in a jar and include the $1 creamer from Walmart in a pretty box for them. Not too much money spent but I know they will love it.
That is a great idea !
Mmm I'm thinking this would be a good xmas gift!
Great recipe!
This looks great - however I'd use almond milk and stevia. No sugar in our house!
Can you buy powered Almond Milk? I've never seen it.
Sure ! Any powdered milk will work 🙂
This looks so good. Thanks for sharing.
i can't wait to mix up a bunch of this and give as Christmas gifts as well as use at home where a jar would last about a day. We love dark chocolate and dark chocolate cocoa sounds delicious
Thanks for sharing the recipe! Perfect for a cold night 🙂
This looks amazing!
What's the mix to water ratio??
Hey Tammy,
It's 2 tablespoons depending on how you like it. Standard sized mug.
