Meaning there are no special or weird ingredients or alternatives to make it lower in carbs. Brussel sprouts are a nutrient beneficial food whether you are on a diet or not. Of course we cover them in butter and seasonings which only creates amazing flavor (and raise the fat if you are keto).
Are Brussel Sprouts Keto Â
I'm often asked if Brussel sprouts are keto, the answer is yes. Coming in at around 3 carbs per full cup serving they are a great side dish that you can add into your keto plan. Just be sure to add only keto approved seasonings, toppings and garnish to your little cabbages. Â
Is it Brussel or Brussels Sprouts
Although almost 80% of people (including myself) refer to these cute little green cabbages as Brussel Sprouts, the correct term is Brussels Sprouts. That is because they were named after the Belgian city, Brussels. As with a lot of things over time terms, phrases and words change. Blonde or Blond, Grey or Gray? Well we answered one for you at least!Â
Air Fryer Brussel Sprouts, Frozen or Fresh
This recipe was made in the air fryer with both frozen and fresh brussel sprouts. The preparation is different and the result won't be exactly the same.
- Frozen Brussel Spouts in the air fryer-Â They must be thawed and pat dry. Can be left whole. The result: softer center, less crispy outside. Still delicious and convenient. Plus they are cheaper.Â
- Fresh -Â More prep time, cut the bottom and split in half, then blanch prior to continuing with the air fryer process. The result: firm inside, more texture, more crisp.Â
Seasoning for Air Fryer Brussel Sprouts
For this recipe, I used a mix of crushed almonds, parmesan, and everything bagel seasoning. The almonds add a nice wow factor especially for a fancier holiday side dish. The brussel sprouts are coated in melted butter then topped with the famous Everything but the Bagel seasoning, or Everything Bagel Seasoning to some brands is something everyone craves, whether keto or not.
Bagel seasoning has things like dried onion, garlic, poppy seeds and salt. It is one of the best all around seasonings for everything including frozen or fresh air fryer Brussels sprouts. If you can't find the everything bagel seasoning, I share how to replace it with appropriate seasonings below.
Do I Need To Wash Them?
If you choose to air fry frozen brussel sprouts, no. If fresh, then yes. In a large bowl with cold water, rinse your sprouts. Trim if needed, then transfer them to a colander and allow the water to drop off. Pat dry, and prep for the air fryer.
How To Pick Brussel Sprouts At The Store
Start by looking for bright green heads. When you touch them to make sure they feel heavy for their size and offer a firm texture. You don't want to buy the larger ones as they can offer a more bitter taste. Smaller Brussels sprouts offer a sweeter and tender texture. Â
Tips For Air Frying Brussels SproutsÂ
- Make sure they are prepped and dry
- Have everything you need on hand, "Mise En Place"
- Do not over crowd the air fryer basket
- Cover sprouts to keep warm while cooking batches
Â
How To Store LeftoversÂ
If you have leftovers simply transfer them to an airtight container. Then store in the fridge for up to three days. Anything after make sure to use your best judgment on if the sprouts are still good. Another thing to add is these are best when served warm and fresh. Once you refrigerate them they will change in texture. The flavor is still fantastic, they just won't be crispy.
Best Way to Reheat The Brussel Sprout Side Dish
I lay my sprouts out on a sheet pan and warm them up in the oven. It can help gain back some of that crispy texture. Or if I am in a hurry, I reach for the microwave instead. Just a quick reheat until they are warmed through.Â
