How To Correctly Apply Eye Shadow For Your Eye Shape

Love the smokey eye look?

Not only do I love the smokey eye look, but it is my go to daily application. It fits my eye shape and I have learned how to tone it down for day wear. A common mistake among makeup wearers is how they apply their eye shadow.  Stop and think about how many times you have seen someone with crazy eye makeup and said to yourself  "what are they thinking?".  Maybe they do not realize that the clown look went out in the 70's or that it is not October  OR  maybe they just do not know how to properly apply it.  For sanity sake, let' go with that one.

A lot of women may not realize that the shape of the eye has a lot to do with how they should apply their shadow.   The picture above gives us some great information and tips ,  let's share this and spread it around, think of it as a community service.

The trick to achieving the perfect smokey eye look is to use 3 colors and start at the lid working upward.  You need 3 shades of color,  darker, lighter and lightest.

  1. Apply the darkest color on the lid and outer corner of the eye (as seen under "down set eyes in the above photo)
  2. Apple the next color across the crease and gently blend into the first color applied.
  3. Apply the lightest color across the top and blend that in.

Use a round brush for blending and apply in small circular motions. Remember, the smokey eye is now called the smokey eye simply for the technique and smudged out look that it gives.  The name comes from using a mix of black, gray and silver eye shadow colors. If you attempt the smokey eye look using lighter toned colors you may not get the exact look you are going for.

If you are not a person who likes blacks,  opt for starting with a dark chocolate and 2 shades lighter.

  3. I have down turned eyes. I watch all the darn makeup tutorials, and they never seem to turn out like the pro. Maybe I've been doing it according to the wrong shape of eyes. Thanks for this!

  7. I like that this isn't just dealing with eye color like most of these eye makeup tutorials tend to.
