Sesame Chicken Meatballs

a Chinese Food Copycat Recipe

You don't have to order take out to have a fantastic Asian meal at home.  When you make it yourself you can control the ingredients and things such as fat and sodium. This recipe for sesame chicken meatballs is a lot more healthy , but just as satisfying. I would not consider the recipe low sodium, there is a few ingredients that tend to be higher in sodium. For this reason I do not salt anything except for the meatballs.

Are you a fan of Chinese sesame chicken?  Then you will love this easy one pot dish.

One of the best things that has ever happened to me in my life was trying chicken meatballs.  I am a HUGE fan of chicken.  Grilled, roasted, ground, BBQ, dark meat, white meat...  you get the picture.

I mean don't get me wrong, I like ground beef meatballs I just feel like they do not fit in to all recipes.  Like this one.  A ground beef meatball just wouldn't go as well with the sauce as the ground chicken does.

Cooking The Meatballs in a Skillet

Sesame Chicken Meatballs are easy and cook up fast.  Just be sure to cook them all the way through- 165 degrees.  They won't dry out, we have a fantastic sauce that they will be smothered in. The best way to gain added flavor is to get the pan nice and hot, add oil and sear the meatballs on all "sides" .  Yes, I know, a circle doesn't have sides, but you know what I mean.

Making our Chinese Sesame Chicken Recipe

NOTE*  if you would like additional sauce, double the recipe and pour half in during the last few minutes of cooking.  Usually the restaurants smother any Chinese sesame chicken recipe with too much sauce and the flavor of the vegetables get lost.  So we intentionally do not make a lot of sauce for this recipe.

  1. It says to use 1/4 cup soy sauce for sauce, but then there's another 2 tablespoons soy sauce at the bottom—when does that get used? Thanks.

    • HI Karen,

I believe you may be talking about the little bit that goes in the meatballs!

      • Hmm ... I don't think so because there's no soy sauce listed for the meatballs. But step 5 says to add the sauce and veggie ingredients. There's 1/4 cup soy sauce in the sauce ingredients, but then at the bottom of the ingredients list (just above the water) there's another 2 tablespoons—when does that go in? Thanks!

  3. when I saw the list of ingredients, I almost passed, because it's a long list! But I'm glad I kept reading, because it still sounds really simple, despite the lengthy list of ingredients. And it just sounds and looks too good to ignore - hopefully, my finished product will be worth the trip to the grocery store! (p.s. - I may, just may, be drooling enough with anticipation to cover the noodles in the pot without even adding water!)

    • HI Marni,

Yes the list does look crazy long, especially in the format the recipe card places it into. If you break it down most ingredients may be things you have on hand already. It is basically just what to use for the meatballs and sauce 🙂
Sorry if it was a bit distracting!

      Enjoy

  5. AWESOME RECIPE- I made the noodles in one pot and boiled it covered and then took it off they were still hard. made another batch of noodles and just poured on top and came out great. any idea of why it didnt cook the first time? Also there wasn't so much sauce and i doubled it but noodles didnt seem to have enough moisture? Even though i threw the first noodles away and put in a new batch the recipe was really really good! so thank u!

    • HI Danielle!
Thank you SO much for commenting. When we tested this recipe the first time the same thing happened to us. We made some adjustments and everything came out perfectly. One thing we changed was the noodle we were using, I wonder if out lo mein is different? The recipe has since been adjusted to including boiling the noodles for just a few minutes so that no matter what kind of noodles (size, brand, etc) , it should work for everyone. Still one pot, because it is in the same pot. 🙂
Thank you for the thoughts on the sauce, I have updated the recipe with a note about doubling if they wish to have more sauce!
